Becky goes to Alex's house. They discuss their plans for a party they are going to in the afternoon. Then they go to the animal hospital and learn about different wild animals.

J.R.R stand for John Ronald Reuel.
Tolkien was an orphan by the age of twelve.
He fought in the First World War.
He was influenced by Viking and Norse mythology.
He told his children stories about a hobbit. They wanted him to write a book. The Hobbit was published in 1937.
The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King.
Filming for Lord of the Rings took place in New Zealand.
It took fourteen months to film the three films.

A big adventure

Alex and Steven are cycling in Oxford. Oxford is famous for its bicycles. Many people cycle to work, school or for pleasure. People who live in Oxford use the river a lot for walks and cycle rides, and it is possible to follow the river out of the city. Alex and Steven are cycling across open park and in the north of Oxford.

A day in our lives

School uniform : Many schools in Britain have a school uniform. Some school have a special shirt and tie, trousers or skirt, and a school jacket or coat. Others simply ask students to wear a particular colour for sweaters, trousers and socks. Most schools do not allow trainers, limit the wearing of jewelry and insist on girl' hair being tied back.

Timetable : Most schools in Britain begin at about 9.00 am and end at around 3.00 - 3.30 p.m. Students usually take sandwiches to school or eat a meal at school.

Homework : British secondary school students usually have homework every evening.

Unit 1 : Our town

Alex and Becky are in Oxford. Alex's cousins is visiting from London. The girls meet him at the bus station. They take Steven round Oxford, but they seem more interested in the shops! Steven would prefer to go to a music shop but Becky buys a T-shirt in a clothes shop. Alex borrows 5 pounds from Steven to help pay for the T-shirt.
